Before making travel arrangements, please review the Volunteer Experience page to understand volunteer requirements.

The travel costs listed below are based on a discounted group airfare rate that has volunteers leaving Seattle on a Wednesday, arriving in Johannesburg on Thursday and then leaving Johannesburg a week from the following Sunday….approximately 12 days.

This plan allows volunteers to work on site from Thursday to Thursday, go on Safari from Thursday to Sunday and then fly home.

Groups of volunteers will be picked up and returned to the Johannesburg airport (which is about 4 ½ hours away), each Thursday. From there, volunteers rent a vehicle to drive to the Safari location. Getting to the Safari is an easy 5 hour drive on good roads with beautiful scenery.

If you can stay on site for a second or third week that would be wonderful.

Going on Safari is completely optional - it's not a problem if you don't want to go.

If this group schedule does not fit your needs you are welcome to handle your own ground transportation. Please be aware that driving at night in South Africa and Lesotho is not recommended.

The group airfares you may have seen previously at this site have since expired. Should you like assitance making travel arrangements, you can Ray at Continental Travel ray@continentaltvl.com. He has been successful at getting discounted wholesale fares for our participants. Of course you are welcome to make your own flight arrangements as well.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SCHEDULING YOUR OWN AIR TRAVEL
If you plan to be part of the group transportation to and from Johannesburg to the project site, schedule your arrival and departure times to allow ample time to collect your bags and clear customs as you arrive, or check your bags and clear security as you depart. We recommend you schedule your arrival time at least 2 hours before the van departure time and your departure at least 2 hours after the van drops you off.

  • Van Departure: The van will depart the Johannesburg airport for the project site at 5:00pm on Thursdays. If you need to fly in on Wednesday night to not miss the van departure time, you can make arrangements to stay at the Intercontinental Hotel right at the aiiport terminal.
  • Van Arrival: The van will drop you back off at the airport at 10am on Thursdays
  • If You're Going on Safari: Your Sunday morning Game Drive will end by 10am. Allow 5 hours driving time to return to the airport and at least 2 hours to return your car and check in for your flight.

Passport Information
Our travel agent has advised us that airlines will not allow you to board the plane if your passport expires less than 6 months after your return date. Please double-check your passport's expiration date and renew now if necessary so you're not hindered by this regulation.
